Operation Boot Camp: PT Test Results

Yesterday was bootcamp “graduation!” We did our final PT test to see how much we’ve improved over the month. I made it through the mile run, only feeling the burn at the very end, which was all the way uphill. But, I saw great improvements!!

Mile Run time: Day 1 – 11:08; Day 30 – 9:48! Shaved about 1 1/2 minutes off my mile!

Pushups (for one minute): Day 1 – 6 regular, 6 assisted; Day 30 – 32 regular!

Situps (for one minute): Day 1 – 25; Day 30 – 30 (not a huge increase, but I kept better form since the first day)

Tricep Dips (for one minute): Day 1 – 29; Day 30 – 46!

I have not weighed myself yet, so I don’t know the pounds lost. I do know I’ve lost about 2 inches from my chest and at least an inch from my waist (I can comfortable zip up my smaller pants again!).

As far as other goals I had set for the month:

1)lose an inch from my waistline (check!)

2)Slim stomach and add some muscle definition (stomach is definitely slimmer, and starting to see a little bit of muscle back again!)

3)Shave minute of mile run (check, 1 1/2 minutes!)

4)gain muscle in arms and back (I’ve got guns!)

5) Have a “can do” attitude (sometimes, it was hard, but through yesterday’s mile run, I kept thinking “I can do this, I can do this.”)

6)drink more water (check! 8-10 glasses a day)

7)Perfect attendance (ALMOST perfect. Just missed one day due to an appointment, but I did homework)

8)Cut caffeine (I’ve only had 3 cups of coffee all month. Check!)

So, I have a little rest this weekend, and then back at in on Monday! I probably won’t blog about it as much. I’m only going three days a week because May is a busier month, but I’m excited about the improvements I’ve seen this month!

Almost to the finish line

Today is the last “workout” of Operation Boot Camp. Tomorrow is our final PT test, to show how we have improved over the past four weeks (I can’t believe four weeks have flown by!).

This week has been HARD. Yesterday’s workout included something called “suicides,” so that gives you an idea of the intensity.

I’m curious to see if doing week one workouts next week in the new session of bootcamp will be easier? I’m also curious to see if I shave any time off of my one mile run. Even when I run myself, I’m more of a believer in the run/walk method, where you plan walking breaks. So I’m never really continuosly running a full mile.

I’m also considering signing up for the Savannah Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon. A friend is doing it and I think I might join her. It would be my second half marathon ever, and in a much flatter terrain than the first (San Francisco).

You may be right, I may be crazy

Yep, they told me it would happen.

I’d get addicted to boot camp.

Maybe it’s my newly formed biceps, or the fact that my stomach is slimming, or that I can run a mile again without feeling like dying.

Well, I signed up for bootcamp again in May.

It’s just three days a week in May, so not AS intense as this month, but something to keep the momentum moving forward. It’s like I’m weaning myself off bootcamp, so that I don’t just go back to my couch potato ways. No more couch potato, I’m a lean mean fat burning machine. Or, something.

Halfway through bootcamp that is!

Other than Saturday, it’s been really easy to stick to the diet plan. Having a group of people to work out with is a huge motivator. Myfitnesspal.com is also a great tool for counting calories and nutrients, and keeping track of food and exercise.

I’ve noticed by the end of week 2 that my stamina increased tremendously. I went on a run on my own again this weekend, and I actually enjoyed it and could have run longer, except the sun was going down.

I notice the muscle definition most in my arms, which is great for my strapless wedding dress. I was able to fit into my old pant size, although, I would still like to lose a little more in the tummy area. But this morning was the first time I started to see a hint of muscle definition in my stomach.

I’m going to commit myself fully to the final two weeks of bootcamp. They are short weeks, only four days, and luckily, there isn’t much planned to tempt me to cheat this next weekend. I’m also running a 5K on Saturday.

Once bootcamp is over, I’m going to start acting like I’m training for a 1/2 marathon, and put myself onto a 1/2 marathon running schedule. I might repeat bootcamp in July also.

So two more weeks and I’ll weigh myself, and measure myself and see what the final PT results are!

OBC: Last Day of Week 2

Today is the last day of week 2 of Operation Boot Camp. I think we might be working out in the rain today, as long as their isn’t any lightning. The weird thing is, I’m NOT hoping for a cancellation. I’d actually be really bummed if I couldn’t work out today. Weird, huh? Must be those exercise endorphins kicking in, I’m getting addicted.

Yesterday’s workout was really hard, but fun. It was basically a relay, with cones set up. We would spring to a cone, and then have to do situps in increasing increments at each cone. The next time through the course, pushups, and so on. The workout went by pretty fast yesterday.

Also, I’m noticing that I’m not as winded during the warm-up anymore. The first week I was huffing and puffing two minutes in. This week, I’m jumping up and down and shouting out “one, two, three, four” with vigor.

My favorite phrase from OBC is “Jack it Out,” meaning do jumping jacks through whatever pain you are feeling. I’m juvenile, so I always giggle when they say that.

My goal today is not to cry. I cried in last Friday’s workout. Real tears, streaming down my face. I’m hoping that doesn’t happen today, but they seem to go really hard on us on Fridays.

Homework for the week focuses on tightening our buns!

Veils, Fascinators and “Jane Fondas”

I got my veil and fascinator from Etsy yesterday! Woot!

The flower fascinator is beautiful, and the veil is a little birdcage veil. It’s a lot smaller than it looked online, but I also think I was putting it on wrong. I was also gross and sweaty after my workout, so I didn’t look very “bridal.”

I also got a matching ring bearer pillow with another pretty peony on it, with a little rhinestone center. This will all be very glitzy and glamourous.

I actually have TWO fascinators for the veil. One I pretty much got for free at the bridal store, and the other I fell in love with on Etsy. One is white, the other is Ivory. I’m not really sure what color my dress is. In some lights it looks white, in others it looks ivory. I think which flower I wear might be a game-time decision.

Meanwhile, I’m almost done with week two of bootcamp. The workouts are still hard. My favorite move is the “Jane Fonda.” Think of her workout videos, kicking your knees high up in the air while pulling down an imaginary bar with your arms.

We do a lot of running. A lot. But it’s kicking my ass which is good.

My mom always talked about the pain of giving birth as a “pain you forget,” which is why people have more than one kid. Well, bootcamp is that kind of pain. It’s horrible while it’s happening, but then after the workout you think, “I survived, that wasn’t so bad, I think  I’ll come back tomorrow.”

I both look forward to and dread the workouts each day. But, I find myself signing up for 5K (OK, the Pete the Cat finisher shirt is a big draw) and planning to attend OBC’s Free Workout Saturdays in May and June.

I’m thinking of doing another OBC session in July, which will only be three weeks, but it’ll be good to tighten up again before the wedding.

Yep, I’m crazy.

Another item checked off the list!

We have bridesmaids dresses! hooray!

This was another “to do” that I was dreading a little bit. However, I have really awesome bridesmaids and the whole process of finding a dress took about 30 minutes. We chose the first one that we tried on.

I think it helped that I looked around online a lot, and also finally settled on a color. The dress wasn’t very impressive on the hangar, but was SO pretty on.

Now we just gotta figure out what the men are gonna wear!

Meanwhile – Day 1 of week two of bootcamp was brutal. I’m not a big fan of running up and down hills. At one point, I felt like I had a huge elephant sitting on my shoulders and I could barely make it back down the hill. It doesn’t help that I think I hurt my ankle. It’s been sore. We do a lot of jumping and shuffling, and my feet and ankles are not fans.

Last night we had our first “encouragement” workout, which is about 5 extra minutes after the full workout. We worked abs, it was great.

I’ve been eating really really well (except for Saturday, it was a birthday party, oops). I did introduce a little bit of dairy back in my life. Pretty much just lowfat string cheese and yogurt. I would like to get some of the soy yogurt. The string cheese is just an easy snack. I’m sure there is a vegan equivalent. But, my diet remains plant strong. I made tofu for the first time last night. It turned out pretty well, a little spicy, but good.
